Birmingham HEMA Club was founded to explore and rediscover the martial arts techniques and treaties of the weapons-masters of medieval and renaissance Europe. We specialise in the works of Italian fight master Fiore Dei Liberi, though often employ methods and techniques learned from the German-derived systems to develop a more rounded technique.
WHO ARE WE?
Birmingham HEMA Club was founded and run by fencers and historical weapon enthusiasts Raphael Aldis, Jon Buckeridge and Khelan Patel.

Raph has always had a passion for historic weapons combat. He is a full-time professional fencing coach, theatre and film fight director and HEMA enthusiast.Introduced to medieval and renaissance weaponry from performance combat, Raph began researching European Martial Arts in 2004. His primary focus is weapons and manuscripts from the medieval period.
As an actor, Jon found his way into HEMA from performance combat training. To improve his choreography skills he began studying historical fight manuscripts and became instantly hooked.Jon specialises in longsword, but also enjoys sword & buckler and dussack. Working from both Italian and German schools of swordplay, Jon has become a versatile and knowledgeable instructor.
Khelan is a modern sport fencing coach with over 7-years of competitive experience. He was introduced to HEMA two-years ago focusing mainly on the longsword from the Italian School. In addition to his coaching, Khelan is also a qualified and experienced fencing referee and has presided at various competitive events around the West Midlands region.
